ITACA: AI and advanced portable remote sensing to increase quality in olive oil production

The overall objective of the project ITACA The aim is to develop a system based on low-cost portable multispectral IoT nodes that allow for the simple and economical measurement of the most relevant parameters that influence the quality of olives intended for olive oil production, with the benefit of assisting the farmer in better forecasting for optimal decision-making and thus obtaining higher quality production and ultimately greater profitability of the olive grove plantation.

Furthermore, this system has been designed to have great potential in olive mills, specifically in the selection stage, where thanks to this new product, the quality parameters of the olives can be measured very quickly in the mill yard, allowing for better decisions to be made in real time when classifying the olives and directing them to the milling line, thus resulting in an increased percentage of extra virgin olive oil obtained.

The system to be developed in ITACA results in the development of the following systems:

  • A low-cost, easy-to-use, portable multispectral IoT node that can be operated by a single person for field use, enablinge to measure in great detail specific aspects of the crop such as the state of the leaves, fruit maturity, etc.
  • A low-cost, drone-mounted, multispectral IoT node that provides complementary information to the handheld node, focusing on giving information about the complete state of the crop.
  • A Cyber-Physical system with Artificial Intelligence that allows the development of intelligent algorithms and, after analyzing the information from the multispectral device, offers the results in the form of expert assistance to the farmer for optimal decision making.

The ITACA project will be developed through collaboration between SOLTEL IT SOLUTIONS and ATYGES. For the proper development of the project, the Research and Dissemination Organization TIC-150 (FIDETIA) is available, a research group specializing in IoT technology, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.

This project has received an incentive from the Innovation and Development Agency of Andalusia (IDEA), of the Regional Government of Andalusia, for an amount of €185,204.89, co-financed 80% by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the implementation of the ITACA project with the objective of promoting technological development, innovation and quality research
