
The Scout project (Autonomous Hyperspectral Mobile System for Olive Grove Improvement) is the new initiative developed by Soltel for the improvement of table olive cultivation, through an innovative autonomous and hyperspectral mobile system. This project has the financial support of the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds within the framework of the 2021 call for aid for research and development projects in artificial intelligence and other digital technologies and their integration into value chains (C005/21-ED), and represents a new commitment by our company to innovation in the agricultural and environmental sector.
Scout is agriculture 4.0
The project was born with the goal to assist the farmer in making decisions regarding the cultivation of table olives, so that he can obtain a higher quality of production and, ultimately, a greater profitability of the olive grove plantation.
The above will be achieved through the development of a system based on portable multispectral IoT nodes low cost which will allow for the simple and economical measurement of the most relevant parameters that influence the quality of table olives.
This will benefit farmers by assisting them in better forecasting for optimal decision-making, thus achieving higher quality production and, ultimately, greater profitability for their olive groves. Furthermore, it will allow olive processors to improve processing and product quality, optimizing resource use.
The process is encompassed in accordance with Royal Decree 1230/2001, which approves the technical and sanitary regulations for the production, circulation and sale of table olives, taking into account the standards of the CODEX and the International Olive Council.
After collecting the information from the multispectral sensors (spectral signatures of the olive), an Artificial Intelligence model will be responsible for analyzing and classifying the data to obtain variables of interest such as the maturity of the olive or the variety of the same.
The development of an Artificial Intelligence model will also be possible thanks to the development of the SCOUT application, since qualified technicians will use the technology implemented in the system for sampling, a vital step in the development of the AI model.
For the proper development of the project, the Research and Dissemination Organization TIC-150 (PRODTI) is available, a research group specializing in IoT technology, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence made up of professors and researchers from the University of Seville.
Expected results
This technological solution represents an absolutely innovative monitoring system, both because of the technologies considered and the low expected cost of the devices, and for which there is currently no direct competition.
The system will consist of a handheld IoT system and a mobile IoT system for collecting information, as well as an AI-powered software platform that will allow the connection of different sensor systems (IoT nodes) with a cloud-based system that will process the information provided by these, which will be analyzed and made available to users on both mobile devices and in a web environment.
The developed system is expected to reach a TRL 5 by the end of the project.
With this proposal, and with the industrial development and subsequent commercialization of Scout, we expect that a increased market share and sales in the agri-food sector.
