SmartCity.eco is a project whose main objective is to build and validate a number of smart tools and advanced services both for cities managers and for citizens, addressing those areas with a bigger environmental and social impact: emergency coordination, urban mobility, pollution, among others.

The project has four main action lines:

1. Data integration and processing platform: Development of an open platform to provide the basic software infrastructure on which to integrate the smart tools and services. This platform includes the necessary components to ease the integration, storage filtering and intelligent fusion of multiple heterogeneous information sources in a single data base, along with the tools to exploit and visualize this data.

2. Operational intelligence and dissemination components: This is one of the main parts of the project and consists on a set of tools and smart services to support decision making, in order to execute the necessary actions in the right moment and with the minimum reaction time. These tools are focused on four specific issues: prediction, simulation, planning, and data analysis.

3. Advanced service for managers: Set of advanced services for city managers including coordinated management of events and incidents, real time city monitoring and the calculation of the most significant indexes about behaviour and evolution of different city variables.

4. Advanced services for citizens: Set of advanced services for citizens that use the smart and dissemination components and all available channels (portals, social networks, smartphones…) to help them in their daily needs and to promote more sustainable habits at the same time. Among other services, a proactive mobility assistant has been developed, capable of learning the user’s mobility habits to anticipate and respond to their needs (incident alert on usual routes, optimal transportation combination…)

Data integration and processing platformimg02Eco

Starting with the design of an ontological data model to support the development of the SmartCity.eco platform, the integration of data from different sources is made possible through an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). Gathered data is processed and stored with its geolocation. The Software and Middleware structure design has the following modules:
– Storage and analysis of large amounts of data (Big Data)
– Geo-referenced information system (GIS)
– A complex events processor (CEP)

Operational intelligence and dissemination components

Data gathered in the platform is processed (Data Analytics) to detect events and execute simulations and predictions.

  • The DSS (Decision Support System) proposes the most adequate action plan for the detected situation: sorting of operational resources, consumption and emissions minimization, warnings and agencies coordination,… The DSS includes a workflow engine to execute response plans.
  • The DSS stands on a series of modules and algorithms:

– Traffic and parking occupancy predictions
– Mobility patterns and Origin/Destination matrixes
– Route planning
– Incidents and anomalies automatic detection
