R&D&IProjects

SmartCity.eco

SmartCity.eco is a project that aims to develop and validate a set of new smart tools and advanced services that provide value to city managers and citizens themselves in issues as relevant as the coordination of actions in the face of events and emergencies, mobility or pollution among others, in those aspects where current solutions have shortcomings or for which the social and environmental impact is increasingly high.

The project encompasses four main lines of action:

1. Data Integration and Processing Platform: Development of an open platform that provides the basic software infrastructure on which intelligent tools and services are integrated. This platform includes the necessary components to facilitate the integration, storage, filtering, and intelligent merging of multiple heterogeneous information sources into a single database, along with the tools to analyze and visualize this data.

2. Operational Intelligence and Dissemination Components: These constitute one of the main parts of the project and consist of a set of intelligent tools and services whose fundamental objective is to support decision-making in order to implement the necessary actions at the right time and with minimal reaction time. These tools have focused on four specific aspects: prediction, simulation, planning, and data analysis.

3. Advanced services for managers: A set of advanced services for city managers, including coordinated management of events and incidents, real-time monitoring of the city, and the calculation of the most significant indicators of the behavior and evolution of different city variables.

4. Advanced Citizen Services: A suite of advanced services for citizens that, using dissemination intelligence components and all available channels (portals, social networks, smartphones, etc.), will assist them with their daily needs while promoting more sustainable habits. Among other services, a proactive mobility assistant has been developed that can learn from users' mobility habits to anticipate their needs (alerting them to incidents on their usual routes, suggesting optimal transport combinations, etc.).

Data integration and processing platformimg02Eco

Based on the design of an ontological data model to support the development of the SmartCity.eco platform, the integration of data from different sources is enabled through an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). The collected data is processed and stored with its geolocation, and the SmartCity.eco Software and Middleware structure includes the following modules:

  • Storage and analysis of large amounts of data (Big Data)
  • Geo-referenced Information System (GIS)
  • A complex event processor (CEP)

Operational and dissemination intelligence components

The data collected on the platform is processed (Data Analytics) to detect events, and to perform simulations and predictions.

  • The DSS (Decision Support System) proposes the most appropriate action plan for the detected situation: reorganization of operational resources, minimization of consumption and emissions, alerts and coordination of agencies,… The DSS includes a workflow engine for the execution of response plans.
  • The DSS relies on a series of modules and algorithms:

– Traffic and parking occupancy prediction
– Mobility patterns and Origin/Destination matrices
– Route planning
– Automatic detection of incidents and anomalies

Advanced services

For managers:

  • Coordinated event and incident management service:
    • Mobility events
    • Stormwater management.
  • Real-time geospatial monitoring of the city.
  • Management of infrastructure elements (panels, traffic lights, cameras,…)
  • Comprehensive management indicator system
  • Urban logistics management
  • Comprehensive fleet management service.

For citizens:

  • Event and information dissemination platform
  • Multimodal trip planner, eco-efficient route design
  • Travel assistance service, personalized incident alerts and alternative routes, charging point booking service, and availability of parking spaces.
  • Social networking and gamification services
